Although they may appear adorable and cuddly, grey squirrels are anything but; anyone who has ever dealt with an infestation will attest to this. Due to their unstoppable chewing habit and sharp teeth, squirrels frequently chew through electrical cables, water pipes, and even wooden joists in the attic. This poses a risk for fire, flood, and structural failure in addition to possibly attracting other pests and bringing fleas into your home.
Our favourite jobs are the challenging ones where you really have to use your experience and knowledge to offer a lasting solution. A few weeks ago, we received a call to survey a Victorian mansion in the heart of Edinburgh where there appeared to be squirrels running up and down the walls. This property had no garden space available, and trapping was not an option because it was in a sensitive area.
The squirrels were only using one point of entry to the building, as was found after a thorough study and risk assessment. Over time, an old vent grate has crumbled, allowing the squirrels to get entry. It was determined that placing a one-way trap door to the access point would be the most efficient and compassionate approach to swiftly and humanely remove the squirrels, allowing them to go and never return, after discussing numerous treatment alternatives with the customer. After we set up the trap door and installed a camera inside the walls to track the squirrel activities over the next few days, all of the squirrels completely left in less than a day.
After returning, we took out our one-way trap door and sealed the opening to prevent squirrels from exploiting this flaw while still permitting airflow.
At Pestagon, we specialise in offering treatments for squirrel exclusion and control in Edinburgh and Fife.
